Review of Literatures about Sputum on west-oriental Medicine

Abstract
Depantment of pulmonary Internal Medi-cme, College of Oriental Medicme, Kyung Hee University. Seoul Korea
I could come to the conclusion like the following after studying many western and eastern books on sputum.
1. Sputum is a kind of tangible dirty pathogenic fliud secreted by respiratory tract, and mucous which is mixed substance of secretion from trachea and bronchus and foreign body. And it is expectorated or swallowed after moved to pharynx by ciliary movement
2. In oriental Medicme, there are wind, cold, damp, hot, dry stagnant, Qi sputm, while in western medicne, mucus, serous, purulent, bloody.
3. Morphologically, cold and damp sputum are similar to mucous sputum, wind sputum to serous, and hot, dry and stagnant sputum to purulent or mucopurulent.
The classification of sputum by observing and comparing type, color and amount of sputum might be of great use to inspection of respiratory disorders.
